Erotic Language in Worship Songs
I was looking for examples of iambic pentameter when I posted an Outgoing Message Sonnet for my voice mail’s outgoing message. I found John Donne’s poem, Batter My Heart. I ask you this, does Donne go too far?
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
And you thought today’s “Jesus is my boyfriend” worship songs were inappropriate. Read the rest of this entry »

Outgoing Message Sonnet
I went through an unfortunate stretch of making “funny” (ha-ha!) outgoing message for my voice mail. (Anyone remember those?) I was working on this one, but just couldn’t finish it. And then I got bored (or wise).
Anyone want to give me a the third stanza? Four lines where the first and third rhyme, likewise the second and fourth.
I find these voice mail speeches such a pain
And yet I put much time in their creation
If I were to allow my head to reign
Its logic would push me into cessation
The last quatrain is really quite a lie
I revel in the chance to show my wit
I love the task to top myself and I
Scoff at the critics who say I’m a twit
yadda yadda yadda
When will I tire of this parlor game?
When good Verizon trumpets loud my fame

Blogging Lent – Others
Woman, behold your son: behold your mother (John 19:26-27).
I’ve been mulling this saying of Jesus from the cross over and over these past few days and I just keep going back to something Martin Wroe wrote. So I’m just going to link to it and leave it at that. Wroe contemplates what the different people were thinking: John the Beloved, Mary the Mother, Jesus the Son.
You can read it. You can listen to a British guy reading it with a bit of Flash animation to watch.
What are you thinking of as you survey the wondrous cross? Are you thinking of the sorrow over your sin or the victory you’re able to take part in? Do you think of Mel Gibson’s two-hour crucifix? Do you think of others?

Worship Idea #6 – Spoken Word for the Crucifixion
Here’s an Easter idea from a couple of years ago. I wanted to do a spoken word thing to set up the song Why by Nichole Nordeman (It’s off the This Mystery album). I opted for a sonnet form and recorded it with an ambient background. Listen for the piano teasing the song in minor key (a sadder, darker sound), especially the last phrase which plays a variation of the line “Why does everyone want him to die?”
