The One Thing a New Christian Should Know

Consuming Worship posted the first half of a question/answer interview with me this week. One of the questions they asked was, What is one thing you wished every worship leader knew?

I answered with something specific to to worship leaders, but it’s not the most important thing a Christ-follower should know. And that takes precedence over what your vocation is. I put to the question to you folks.

What is one thing a new Christian should know?

Note to My Son from May 2007

You know when we’re gone which means you know we’re there. When I feed you, you look up and reach your hand out lovingly, tenderly, towards my cheek. Then you pinch me between your jagged talons that people call fingernails. It hurts a bit, but you don’t know any better. I’ll have to get used to that.

Top 5 Things I, as a Good Christian, Am Thankful For

In case you end up playing that game this Thanksgiving where you’re asked to share something you’re thankful for, here are the top 5 things I, as a good Christian, am thankful for.

I am thankful:

  1. That we live in a Christian nation.
  2. That our President is a Christian defending Christian values (not the value of taking care of widows, orphans, and foreigners in our land, the other ones. The good ones).
  3. That God wants to give me the desires of my heart. (Dear Santa God, I desire a 13 inch, 2 gigabyte MacBook).
  4. That I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
  5. That Halloween and its pagan traditions are behind us and we can look forward to the pure Christian holiday of Christmas.

I am, however, truly thankful for my smoking hot wife.

Letter to My Son from April 2007

This was something I wrote to my son who was five months at the time. His head growth was a point of concern for his doctor, who tries (like any doctor) to practice due diligence without being an alarmist. My boy and his beautiful head is fine

I tell people you came out of the box cute. None of this waiting for your squished face to normalize. Though by definition all babies are cute, some babies just are not cute. You are not some baby.

Your head is a little lopsided. The back slopes a bit. Perhaps it’s because of the vacuum cleaner that was used to suck you out the womb and into our world. It kept slipping off, frustrating the doctor. Or maybe it’s because you prefer to look to the left. Otherwise your face is pleasingly round and symmetrical, if not a little big. But many babies’ heads are big, right?

At your four month check up the doctor commented your cranium is a little on the big side. She wanted to schedule another appointment a month later to make sure she said “it doesn’t go off the charts.” She’s early on in her career as a pediatrician. People assure me that new doctors tend to be very cautious. She asked me if there was a history of big heads in our family. “Anyone wearing big hats?” I told her no, not as far as I knew. Then she studied me like she was perusing a melon in a grocery store. She said, “Let me measure your head.” Read the rest of this entry »

Faith and Works

Dave has been tracking where our church has served in Reno on a Google map. He’s recently added some extra features like photos and what not. It’s encouraging to see evidence that we as followers of Jesus are serving our city.
Here’s the map of where Coram Deo has served in Reno.
