Co-Dependent Worship
Lately I’ve been self-conscious about singing worship songs that speak of the submission of my will to God’s. Let my will be absorbed in God’s. I want to want the things that God wants.
If my friend was writing a poem to his girlfriend that went like that I would think a) he needs to turn the I’m desperate” knob down a few notches and b) he was in an unhealthy relationship. But it’s different with God, right, because he’s—you know, God.

Did I mention there are previews for the This American Life TV show on thisamericanlife.org. And it looks like I’ll be able to watch full episodes on Showtime’s website. Yea!

This American Life on Showtime
or What Does Public Radio Look Like
The good news This American Life has created a television version of their popular radio show. The bad news is it’s on Showtime and I don’t have cable. What I do have are rabbit ears, but I’m happy if just the network channels come through clearly.
When I first heard Ira Glass and company were doing TAL for the telly I was excited. I was confident they would be able to strike the same tone visually as they did aurally. Nate was a little less confident. Is it going to be like 20/20? I couldn’t imagine that it would, but when I start to describe what the radio show itself is like (it’s like a series of short documentaries done by journalists and writers based on a weekly theme), it does sound a bit like a 20/20.
How would you describe This American Life if it were brought to television? I’m going with Zach Braff’s Garden State. It has that vibe and that kind of pacing. Am I off on this?

Buy Photography; Fight Poverty
Tim and Abby have a new photography website up at mavora.com. The site includes landscapes of New Zealand and the Sierras and, of course, black & white photos.
Right on the front page it reads that 40% of sales goes to “alleviating poverty in our global community.” Forty percent, man!
Go buy something for your office.

Video About the Clash of Civilizations
found via Dallas
Avaaz.org produced the flash video that focuses on the problems in the Middle East. It shows a European woman and an Arab woman. Text moves across the screen asking things like Is this how you see me? and What’s the difference?
It’s an attempt at a grassroots movement. If the people lead, the leaders will follow, the video says.
I appreciate the effort to motivate people to be active in a cause they already believe. And I like the sentiment of the video, understanding that while we portray the Other in unflattering caricatures, they make the same mistake about us.
What I don’t appreciate are the jabs at President Bush. There’s a moment where Bush is a literal puppet for Dick Cheney. I’m no fan of Bush or why and how he got us involved in an invasion of Iraq, but somehow portraying him in an unflattering caricature was out of place in this video about mutual understanding.
