Names for Those Never Born
On PostSecret (at least until February 4) this postcard is up. Underneath it are emails that were sent to the site in response. There’s no explanation in them, just more names.
When do you move from thinking of the baby as an it to a him or her? When is it a person? And I don’t mean medically speaking or spiritually, but emotionally. When are you supposed to allow yourself to connect to the pregnancy as more than a medical condition?
They say if they make it through the first trimester the chances go way up for survival. I kept asking people, parents, when we would be safe. When would we be out of the woods? But really, any time during the pregnancy the baby might die. At birth their might be complications. One person finally told me. You’re not out of the woods until they turn eighteen and even then you still worry you might lose them.
We called the first Junebug.
We were too scared to name the second.
We thank Jesus for the birth of the third. Two and half months down, eighteen years to go.
