In Response to Someone Militantly Optimistic

We (and by we, I mean my wife) have had two miscarriages. The person I’m talking to has had none.

He said: I hear congratulations are in order!
I said: Yeah, I guess the planets aligned for us.
He said: And how are you guys doing?
I said: We’re doing all right.
He said: Just all right? Come on, now!
I said: We’re just being cautiously hopeful.

I should’ve said: Well, you know how it is. Remember how you felt when you lost two pregnancies? Oh… I guess not.

I was only aware of one miscarriage. We definitely need to keep in touch better. Can I submit condolences and cautious optimism in one breath?

But remember - you’re still further along than I am. I’d like to procreate, but it truly is impossible for me at the moment. Not denying your difficulties, but trying to encourage you to remember the areas where things have gone right for you, too. It’s easy to forget the latter in the face of the former.

So, in the times when I can do so in faith, I’ll be praying for you and your wife. ‘Cause hey, I love you guys.

      Optimists suck.

The second pregnancy we kept to ourselves. The third (this one) we thought we’d quietly tell everyone about for support and prayers. So thank you for your prayers.

Thanks. Just so you know. Everything is going great.
