The Words Behind the Words

Want a heartbreaking story? Real Live Preacher relates what is probably a familiar story for many pastors. A couple wants to get married and asks a minster of a church they do not attend to perform the ceremony. They just don’t want any of that religious stuff.

On a tangent… I love ceremony. I love ritual and tradition. I love written prayers. I know many of my evangelical Protestant brethren find those things inherently devoid of meaning. I don’t see why they just can’t guard themselves against that. Place your focus on God. Give yourself to worship. Mean the words you say.

Burning Peace CD Release Party

Baby Fever

My wife is pregnant. I’d like to chronicle the experience somehow. I’m a big fan of This American Life, so maybe I’ll record a sort of audio essay. Or maybe I’ll just write about here.

I won’t however be as obsessive as The Trixie Update. It has a ton of hard information graphed and charted, like diaper status and sleeping habits. Perfect application fo the web, no?

If Jesus Was Born Today

Pat’s post here about where Jesus would be born if he were born today is always a fun and helpful question to ask. It reminded me of this painting by Jim Janknegt and this poem by Steve Turner at rejesus. Here’s an excerpt of the poem:

If Jesus was born today
it would be in a downtown motel…

and

Childhood would be a blur [...]
dwindling by his late teens into
‘Where Is He Now?’ features in Sunday magazines.
